What were they thinking when they gave me my name?No matter where your name comes from it will inevitably be your "history in the making" and that final page will become "the story of me"!The most important decision my parents ever made was deciding upon my name! I wonder how they got there? I mean, was there much thought involved? I wasn't the first baby born into this pack and I'm sure the first born was given much more consideration, but nonetheless a name is forever and I would have hoped they at least "labored" over it for a while. It's important to realize that with this one seemingly simple choice they would initiate "the story of me!"
It's PERSONAL:Personal to whom, my parents or ME? Was the idea of creating such a name a way of grabbing parental attention? Was the response so overwhelming that what started out as "funny" or "cute" eventually grew on them? Did they even imagine the possibilities of the rhyme or reason? Was it possible that both my parents were functionally illiterate? Spelling counts! Did my parents have any real friends? Did no one come to my defense "in utero"?? Seriously, what were they thinking when they gave me my name?? UNIQUE or NOT UNIQUE, that is the question:Yes, this is the question. But this question should be posed towards the naming an inanimate object like a new business, not a new baby! When did the unusual become the norm and who is to blame? Should we blame the celebrities who gather with names like Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter APPLE, Jamie Oliver's daughter DAISY BOO, Arthur Ashe's daughter, CAMERA and let us not forget Rob Morrow's son TU! If these are to be considered "designer" names, then maybe it's best they're read on a label and not on a report card? Or maybe, just maybe the uniqueness is in the story, my very own story of how they gave me my name? A GIFT:Dear Parents, this name you give is a GIFT. A gift that will last forever and ever. Your baby will out grow their pajamas, their car seats and their cribs, but never this gift! Choosing the perfect name for your son or daughter will be challenge. Are you up for it? How will you begin their <em>"story of me"?</em> What if, after all that creative thought and effort into finding the perfect name...you realize you blew it??? Don't fret. Your child will always have the future option of exchanging your gift for a better one. I just might follow in the footsteps of Issur Danielovitch Demsky and Demetria Guynes, two very well known celebrities who's parents I'm convinced were somehow, in a past life, related to mine! It's comforting to know that every generation has a handful of those who have asked, “what were they thinking when they gave me my name?"
